Replastering

When is it time?

Replastering a pool is necessary when the existing plaster surface begins to deteriorate, showing signs of wear and tear that affect both the aesthetics and functionality of the pool. Here are some indicators that it may be time to replaster your pool:

  1. Surface Stains and Discoloration: If you notice persistent stains, discoloration, or rough patches on the pool surface that cannot be removed through normal cleaning methods, it may be a sign of deteriorating plaster.

  2. Chipping and Flaking: As the plaster ages, it can start to chip, flake, or delaminate, resulting in rough or jagged edges along the pool walls and floor. These areas can become unsightly and may also pose safety risks to swimmers.

  3. Visible Cracks: Cracks in the plaster can develop over time due to ground movement, temperature fluctuations, or structural issues. While small hairline cracks are common and often not cause for concern, larger cracks or ones that continue to widen should be addressed promptly to prevent further damage.

  4. Loss of Smoothness: The plaster surface of a pool should feel smooth to the touch. If you notice a gradual loss of smoothness or the appearance of pits and divots in the plaster, it may indicate that the surface is wearing down and needs to be replastered.

  5. Water Loss: A sudden increase in water loss or the need to frequently top up the pool water level could be a sign of plaster deterioration, particularly if there are no visible leaks in the plumbing or equipment.

  6. Excessive Age: The lifespan of pool plaster can vary depending on factors such as water chemistry, maintenance practices, and environmental conditions. However, as a general guideline, pool plaster typically lasts around 5 to 15 years before requiring replastering.

It’s important to address any signs of deterioration in a timely manner to prevent further damage to the pool structure and ensure the safety and enjoyment of swimmers. If you notice any of the aforementioned signs, it’s advisable to consult with a professional pool contractor to assess the condition of the plaster and determine if replastering is necessary.

We can also give you choices in the surface texture. Some people like the feel of the regular pebble finish. Others like the extra smoothness of polished marble or quartz aggregate finishes. Either way, you’ll get a new pool interior that is prettier and longer lasting than ever before.
